Day 1 Dehradun to Sankri
The trip begins in Dehradun. It is a quiet city in Uttarakhand. It is the main door to the Garhwal Himalayas.
You leave the flat land early in the morning. The air is cool. The long drive starts. The road climbs up the mountains in twists and turns. You see the Yamuna river below you as you go. Later, you follow the Tons river and the Supin river. The sight of these big rivers is powerful. The whole valley feels wild and old.
You pass small towns like Mussoorie and Purola. The air gets cold quickly as you gain height. You start to smell the sharp scent of pine trees a lot. Every corner brings a new mountain view. The buildings became smaller and built more of wood.
Finally, you reach Sankri (6,400 ft), the base village. The sky turns soft gold as evening arrives. Wooden houses and happy, local people welcome you. This small village is your first real taste of the winter world. It feels far away from city life.
Bonfires crackle outside the guesthouses. Hot chai warms your hands. You look up and the stars look bigger and closer than they have in months. When you sleep that night, you are sleeping near the big mountains. You feel ready for the story they have to tell you.
Day 2 Sankri to Juda ka Talab
Morning in Sankri looks like a painting. As you wake up, from the windows of the guest house you get to see views huge mountain with golden sunlight on it. And frost on the roof, grass and leaves of trees.
You eat a good breakfast. Then the walk starts. The path climbs slowly out of Sankri. You walk through a thick forest. Soon, snow starts to fall gently. The first snow always makes you slow down. You breathe deeper. The cold air goes into your lungs. Your boots crunch on the snow. That sound sets the day’s rhythm. You stop talking so much. It is a quiet walk.
Snow starts to fall gently soon after. The first snow always makes you slow down. You breathe deeper. You feel the cold air go into your lungs. Your boots crunch on the snow. That sound gives the day a good rhythm. You do not talk as much. It is quiet walking now.
After about 4 kilometers, you arrive at Juda ka Talab (9,100 ft). This lake is half frozen. The ice has a grey color. The forest around the lake is silent. People say drops of water from Lord Shiva’s hair made the lake. True or not, the spot feels very important and peaceful. It is a good place to stop.
At night, you sit by a campfire. Countless stars shine above you. The dark sky is huge. Flames flicker in the cold air. People share stories and laugh. The mountain air brings a kind of peace you cannot find in the city. This is what winter trekking really is. It is honest, pure, and very quiet.
Day 3 Juda ka Talab to Kedarkantha base camp
When you wake up and comes out from the tent you will see mist floating on frozen. The morning is cold. You get ready for trek and then you start trekking toward the Kedarkantha Base Camp (11,200 ft).
After Juda ka Talab the path gets steep. As you climb high, trees are left behind and then soon the forest is gone. Now you see huge snow meadows. They are wide open. White snow stretches far away. Every step feels like walking inside a picture. You look up and see big peaks. Swargarohini, Black Peak, and Bandarpoonch watch you. The view is all open now.
You reach base camp in the afternoon. The snow shines under the strong sun. It can be windy here. Your tents look small in all the white. They look like little spots of color.
In the mountains the evening comes fast. You will sit around the bonfire or in a dining tent and talk with each other and your guide also shares many things and he points towards the summit that is your summit. Tomorrow early morning at the time of sunrise you will stand on that summit and feeling sunrise.
Day 4 Summit day
The only sounds are your heavy boots crunching the snow. And you hear people breathing hard. You see your breath turn into white clouds in the cold air.
The climb from base camp to the Kedarkantha summit (12,500 ft) is steep. It is difficult. It takes a few hours.
Halfway up, you look back. The entire valley below is covered in moonlight. Then, the dawn starts. It is a slow show. The first sunlight hits the high peaks first. They turn a beautiful pink then gold.
You finally stand on the summit. You feel everything: you are tired, proud, and completely calm. The 360-degree view is huge. Snow peaks, Bandarpoonch, Kalanag, Swaragarohini and a part of these ranges of Gangotri and Yamunotri and har ki dun valley are visible. The edge of the horizon melts into the clouds far below. This is a morning you will remember forever.
This is why Kedarkantha is such a great winter trek. It is not just about reaching the top. It is about what you feel and see on the way up and down.
The walk down is long. You descend to Hargaon campsite (8,900 ft). It is a lot of fun. You slide on the snow. You laugh a lot. You take many photos. That night, you sit by the fire again. The stars look much closer than before.
Day 5 Hargaon to Sankri
The last morning feels different. You walk slowly. You know each step takes you further away from this beautiful, wild place.
The trail goes back down through the forest. You get back to Sankri by noon. It is the same village that welcomed you days ago. Now it feels warmer and more familiar. You celebrate a little bit.
Day 6 back to Dehradun
The long drive back to Dehradun starts in the morning. But your mind is full of quiet smiles. The snow forests fade into memory as you drive. But something inside you is now quiet. It is still, just like the frozen lake at Juda ka Talab.
You came looking for snow. You go home carrying a feeling of peace.
